Reflecting on Lessons Learned from My Late Mentor: Vic Brits
Years ago, when I embarked on my Toastmasters journey, I was fortunate to cross paths with a remarkable mentor, Vic Brits. Despite being in his sixties – seventies, Vic exuded wisdom and sharpness that left a lasting impression on me.
At our Toastmasters meetings, Vic was the epitome of elegance. He was always clad in a suit with a pocket square, a spot colour matching his tie. His commitment to excellence extended beyond his attire; he was equally dedicated to nurturing aspiring speakers like myself.
When Vic offered to mentor me for my first ten speeches, I was honoured and intrigued. Little did I know the profound impact he would have on my growth as a speaker. Vic’s approach to mentorship was rigorous yet compassionate. He challenged me to write, rehearse, and deliver my speeches with meticulous attention to detail.
I vividly remember the first time I presented my speech at his house, a week before the scheduled event. To my surprise, Vic dissected every aspect of my delivery – from body language to vocal tone – with surgical precision. He emphasized the importance of practice, refinement, and continuous improvement.
What truly set Vic apart was his unwavering commitment to my development. He held me accountable, pushing me to strive for excellence even when it seemed daunting. His firmness was tempered with empathy, reflecting a deep-seated respect for the mentor-mentee dynamic.
Looking back, I realize that Vic’s mentorship transcended public speaking; it was a lesson in humility, perseverance, and mutual respect. His guiding hand shaped my speaking skills and my approach to challenges and opportunities.
As I continue on my professional journey, I carry with me the invaluable lessons imparted by Vic Brits. His legacy is a beacon of inspiration, reminding me of the transformative power of mentorship and the importance of paying it forward.
In honour of Vic’s memory, I urge aspiring mentees and mentors to embrace respect, accountability, and dedication. Together, we can create a culture of mentorship that uplifts and empowers individuals to reach their full potential.
